The Image of God

While spending several days in the hospital lately with my sister-in-law I had an unexpected revelation on the image of God... and how we normally portray him... I'd like to share it with you.

Take a minute and pull out a piece of paper.  I want you to do a little work with me.  It's up to you, you can look at my answers if you want to and then try to add your own.

#1 - Describe man. What is he like?
What words do we use to describe him and masculinity?

resilient, resourceful, intelligent, persistent, defender, protector, provider, leader, decision maker, adventurous, creative...

#2 - Describe woman.  What is she like? W
What words do we use to describe her and femininity?

talkers, touchers, feelers, tender, nurturers, encourager, all about relationships, concerned with beauty, life givers, creative...

#3 - Now, take a moment and think about God.
Think about his characteristics.  How do we describe God?
Go beyond the normal listing of God is love, he's good, he's faithful, he's just.  Think about it... have you begun to use words that you used to describe man and woman?

Man's example of a provider and protector are imperfect examples of God's image placed in man.  In so many ways, when thinking about the image of God we refer back to the male image.  What we don't usually think about is woman.  When women are described, we are called "touchy feely", we are concerned about beauty and are "all about relationships." Normally, when this is talked about it's not something said as a compliment. And yet, these are also imperfect examples of who God is.... God's image placed in woman.

God is :  resilient, resourceful, intelligent, persistent, a defender, a protector, the provider, our leader, the decision maker, totally adventurous, a talker, a toucher, a feeler, tender, the great nurturer, an encourager, he's all about relationships, concerned with beauty, the ultimate life giver and the most creative.

We need to take to heart the words of Genesis 1: 26(a) & 27,
[v 26a]    "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion... ..... ,"

[v 27]       "So God created man(mankind) in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

Neither man nor woman by themselves are a complete image of God for he made us both to show his image.  The image of God we see in man is complimented and completed by the image of God we see in woman.... and vice versa.
